HomeLight Review | What is HomeLight? How Does HomeLight Real Estate Work?

If you’ve never heard of HomeLight, the first questions to ask are: What is HomeLight and how does it work?

With company headquarters in California, HomeLight uses data from over 2 million agents, over 200,000 brokerages, and 29 million transactions to connect users with top real estate agents in their area.

HomeLight realtors are selected based on their skills, experience, sales data, and customer reviews. This makes it easy for buyers and sellers to connect with HomeLight agents that have demonstrated real results.

How Does HomeLight Real Estate Work?

Our HomeLight review found that the program applies historical data to fit each user’s unique needs. To generate a list of HomeLight agents, users provide the following data:

  • Location—This generates a list of HomeLight agents with specific expertise within your desired location.
  • Buy or sell—HomeLight realtors are filtered by their historical expertise with buying or selling homes.
  • Property type—This is particularly important for users that want to sell their home, since staging various property types relies on different skill sets.
  • Price—First-time home buyers and luxury home buyers likely have drastically different budgets, making it important to find HomeLight agents that have experience working within your specific budget.
  • Agent type—Whether you value relationship-building or someone who can get the job done within a tight deadline, HomeLight can find the right real estate agent for your needs.

HomeLight Review | Are Searches for HomeLight Agents Free? (Warning)

Whether you are buying or selling a home, HomeLight referrals to top-performing agents are free to generate, providing an affordable option for anyone to find the right real estate agent.

However, our HomeLight review did find that there is an underlying “cost” to using the HomeLight real estate agent database: your personal information. As a word of caution, before viewing your personalized list of real estate agents, you will need to supply your name, email address, and phone number.

According to the Terms of Service, providing this information automatically authorizes HomeLight and their real estate partners to contact you via “phone, email, mail or other reasonable means.” Even if your phone number is on a Do-Not-Call list, you may still receive communication about your HomeLight real estate search.

For users that are simply testing the waters of buying or selling—and do not want to receive calls or text messages—this means that HomeLight referrals may not be the best option.
