What Are the Google Driverless Car Project and Uber’s Driveless Car?
One of the leading driverless car companies is the technology giant Google. The Google driverless car project was launched in 2009, and recently, the Google car passed the two million mile mark.
While Google got started by retrofitting other cars for with their driverless car technology, according to Business Insider, the Google driverless car project:
“Built its first driverless car prototype dubbed the ‘Koala car’ in 2014. It has no steering wheel or pedals since it’s fully autonomous. The Koala car is closer to what Google wants to sell on the market, but the company has no plans to sell its driverless cars itself, Recode reported. The Koala cars marked the first time Google got its driverless cars on the road without a person onboard to intervene if something went wrong.”
One of the biggest questions that people have regarding driverless cars is related to their safety. Though it wasn’t tragic, the Google driverless car accident was widely reported by the media because of the public’s fear of driverless cars going rogue. The most recent Google driverless car accident occurred in July of 2015 in California.
In the years since Google started testing its driverless vehicles, there have been 14 Google driverless car accident occurrences. None of the accidents, however, have been caused by the driverless car, but rather by other drivers rear ending or hitting the Google driverless car.
Another leader of driverless vehicles is Uber’s driveless car. Uber is best known for its decentralized taxi system, and in recent years, Uber’s driveless car has hit the streets as a driverless taxi. Earlier this year, the driverless taxi system offered by Uber hit the streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

What Is the Projected Driverless Car Cost, and When Will Driverless Cars Be Available?
One of the main questions that everyone has regarding driverless vehicles is “When will driverless cars be available?” While driverless car technology has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, there are still a number of restrictions and legal challenges that need to be addressed.
According to Forbes magazine, “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has defined six levels of autonomous driving. Level 0 is what you’d expect – zero driver assistance from the car.
Level 1 indicates one or more driver assistance systems, like stability control and/or cruise control, but the systems are not linked to each other. Level 2 is two or more linked functions, like lane-keeping assist and collision/brake mitigation working together, but the driver is still expected to be alert and ready to instantly seize control of the vehicle.
Level 3 combines several automated functions and allows the car to be primarily in control for extended periods of time.”
Currently, driverless cars are allowed on the road up to level 3 in every state except New York. It will be a number of years before driverless car technology is trusted enough to give over more complete control.
Another concern of many consumers is related to the driverless car cost. While it may sound enticing to enjoy your coffee and paper while driving to work, not everyone is willing and able to shell out the big bucks for that type of commodity. Luckily, as the technology improves, the driverless car cost will continue to get cheaper. A driverless car model offered by Honda recently hit the market at only $20,000.
