This is designed to help parents or grandparents start saving for college and education expenses, and it’s incentivized because the amounts deposited in the account grow tax-free until distribution.
The student doesn’t owe tax on the distributions if they are less than the student’s qualified education expenses at an approved, eligible school. The benefit applies to not only higher education costs but also elementary and secondary school expenses.
