San Francisco Bay Area Educators Credit Union was formed to serve teachers in the San Francisco area. Membership is open to members of United Educators of San Francisco, Local 2121, AFT Local 1493, Community College District Federation of Teachers in San Francisco or San Mateo or family members of a current SF Bay Area Educators member.
San Francisco Bay Area Educators Credit Union was started by only three San Francisco teachers. Teachers are busy; therefore, the first office hours were only two days per week – after the bell rang at the end of the school day.
Since this was a small operation at its inception, the teachers kept the books and records for the credit union in two apple boxes which the treasurer kept in his/her car trunk. Eventually, teachers joined, made deposits that were in turn loaned to other teachers, and San Francisco Bay Area Educators Credit Union continued to grow by developing trust over five decades.
