United Heritage Credit Union Review

Gaining its start in 1957 by serving members of the military, United Heritage Credit Union was originally known as Military Federal Credit Union. This credit union changed its name to United Heritage Credit Union in 1993 and became state charted in 1997, enabling them to open their doors to all of central Texas, Austin, and Tyler.

Key Factors Leading Us to Rank This Firm as One of This Year’s Top Credit Union Firms

Upon completing our United Heritage Credit Union reviews, we included it in AdvisoryHQ’s ranking of this year’s best credit unions based on the following factors.

United Heritage Credit Union Review: VIP Money Market Account

With United Heritage’s VIP Money Market account, members have the benefits of an interest-earning savings account with the convenience of a checking account. The account has no monthly fee with a minimum balance of $2,500, and account holders can clear up to three checks a month on the account. The account also allows for unlimited deposits and has tiered interest rates with exclusive rates for accounts over $100,000.

In addition to having convenient access to their money, VIP Money Market account holders may also choose to upgrade to Premier Perks for $5.95 a month and receive these added benefits:

  • Identity theft and fraud protection
  • Credit card protection service
  • Savings on dining, recreation, and every day purchases
  • Discounts on prescriptions and vision care

United Heritage Credit Union Review: Coverdell Education Savings Account

A Coverdell Education Savings Account (CESA) is a great way for families to save for their child’s future college tuition. This interest-bearing account allows families to contribute up to $2,000 a year toward their child’s future education expenses.

A phenomenal feature of this account is that the money may be contributed and withdrawn tax-free as long as it used to pay for a child’s qualifying education expenses before he reaches 30. Qualifying expenses include college tuition, room and board, books, supplies, equipment, and college fees.

United Heritage Credit Union Review: IRAs

United Heritage Credit Union offers both fixed-rate and variable rate IRAs. Each comes with its own advantages.

A variable rate IRA has no minimum balance requirement and no monthly fee. Dividends are paid quarterly, and contributions may be tax deferred. A variable rate IRA is available as both a traditional and Roth IRA, and spousal contributions are allowed.

A fixed-rate IRA has a minimum balance requirement of $1,000 and has terms of 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months available. Dividends are paid quarterly, and contributions may be tax deferred. Interest rates are tiered. Like the variable rate IRA, the fixed-rate IRA is available as both a traditional and ROTH IRA, and spousal contributions are allowed.

United Heritage Credit Union Review: Freedom Checking

United Heritage has coined its Freedom Checking account as fully loaded checking that won’t break the bank. The list of benefits certainly seems to back up this sentiment. A Freedom Checking account comes with:

  • No minimum open balance
  • No monthly balance requirement
  • No monthly fees
  • Free mobile banking and app
  • Free online banking
  • Free bill pay
  • Instant issue Visa debit card
  • Unlimited check writing
  • No per check charges
  • Free account transfers
  • Free lobby coin counters
  • Overdraft protection
  • Digital copies of cleared checks

With so many great benefits, their Freedom Checking account is just one more reason United Heritage made our list of the best credit unions.
