What Are Autonomous Cars and Autonomous Driving?

When we think of autonomous cars, most of us probably have an image of self-driving cars from some futuristic sci-fi movie. While the self-driving is certainly one important aspect of autonomous driving technology, there are other elements in a vehicle that can make them considered autonomous driving.

According to Cars.com, “Your car can measure things such as wheel speed, steering wheel position, engine throttle position, and more, letting the computer ‘know’ what the car is doing. Radar and cameras measure nearby obstacles (and the space between them, such as when it comes to finding a parking space) and identify approaching cars, nearby pedestrians, parking-lot obstacles and lane markers to let the car know what’s going on around it.”

All of these computerized systems in many of today’s cars allow automated cars not only to warn you as the driver, but also to react on their own, which is one of the main highlights of autonomous driving technology.

The autonomous cars from Google are still in development, though the Google autonomous car recently passed 2 million test miles. The Google Autonomous car project aims to continue to develop completely self-driving vehicle technology and is in the process of trying to show regulators that these types of completely autonomous cars are trustworthy and the future of transportation.

Uber’s autonomous car technology has hit the streets in a number of major cities, offering people a “personless” taxi system in major urban areas such as Pittsburgh. Uber’s autonomous car technology is still a long way from being completely autonomous, as a driver is always in the seat in case something goes wrong.

However, according to Wired.com “Uber has a straightforward goal: become even more efficient and profitable by jettisoning the human drivers who take home the majority of their customers’ money. Or, as one Uber engineer puts it to me: getting rid of the overhead.”

Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of Tesla Motors, is a true visionary who wants to take humans to Mars and fill our roads with automated cars. In October of 2016 it was reported that all of Tesla’s autonomous cars have full self-driving hardware installed. Lastly, Waymo is in the process of developing autonomous cars from Google. As noted above, the Google autonomous car recently passed the 2-million-mile threshold. Since 2009, Waymo has been testing their fully self-driving car technology on the city streets of Kirkland, Washington; Mountain View, California; Phoenix, Arizona; and Austin, Texas.
